The Calpe Fishermen's Guild was created in 1924 by Father Colomina as a corporate association of fishermen with a clear social purpose to defend the interests of all sailors. It has its headquarters on Av. Virgen del Carmen in the old town, and about 500 members belong to it, including shipowners, sailors and pensioners, who are governed by statutes that regulate both the rights and obligations of the brothers and the related tasks. with the administration and marketing of fish from a fleet of 22 boats in which about 160 people fish. Our work involves numerous projects beneficial to society: Solidarity project for cleaning the Mediterranean One of the great solidarity projects carried out by the Calpe Fishermen's Guild is that of cleaning the sea: “In the end, in all situations, the sea is very grateful, and gives us what we need if we take care of it. . For this reason, the brotherhood is carrying out a project to clean the Mediterranean by eliminating plastic from its seabed. Through the technique we use for fishing, trawling, we collect all the plastic and waste we find at the bottom of the sea, and we do it for free. Then comes a company that takes the plastic, recycles it and makes clothes with it. This is how we manage to clean the sea, since we are the first to be aware of keeping it clean so we can enjoy it much longer. And thanks to this project throughout Alicante we have collected more than 40,000 kilos of plastic from the seas last year alone. We have been criticized a lot for using this dragging technique, but people are very wrong, since where we work there is no posidonia. Our boats work from 50 meters inwards from the coast, and at that sea level there is no posidonia. Thanks to this we have managed to collect so much garbage from the seabed.”
